McLennan_Great Wall of China_002

So far it’s been a busy year with commercial shoots in the South Island, US, China, Norway, Botswana, Fiji and Alaska.  But while at home briefly between projects earlier this year I had the privilege of presenting to a few different groups within New Zealand’s very enthusiastic photographic community.  One of the questions I always get asked is “how did you become a travel photographer” – or more often worded by the younger members of the audience “how can I become a travel photographer”?  (Watch this… READ MORE >

Capture

Further to my April post on the Aurora Borealis I photographed in Alaska – and the time lapse video I made from some of the footage I captured – here is another series of time lapse segments taken around the South Island of New Zealand during my Wildlight Safaris Sth Island Photo Tour (next tour dates are the 10th to 23rd of April 2015 if you wish to join me – its a fantastic adventure which I can thoroughly recommend)!  To read more about my Photo… READ MORE >

Well, it’s been pretty quiet on the blog front of late, my apologies! That’s what happens when you have a few too many things on your plate all at once. June was indeed a busy month with our Travel Photography Awards competition closing on the 30th, I was booked to be shooting in Fiji for a full month (followed by only a week at home before heading out again to China), I had three speaking engagements to deliver to different groups within the photographic community and… READ MORE >

SUP with reef sharks in the crystal clear waters of Moorea, French Polynesia

Some of my favourite images are those that I have pre-visualised beforehand.  No doubt there is something fun and exciting about turning up somewhere and seeing and photographing the unexpected, but being able to create an image that I already have in my head is even more of a thrill for me.  Especially when it comes out as great as this one. Paddle boarding is a huge sport that is taking off around the world and I am a keen fan myself.  Ever since getting my… READ MORE >

During a recent trip to Alaska with Dean Fitzpatrick of Wildlight Safaris I was once again witness to the amazing Aurora Borealis (or Northern Lights) known to this area. Having photographed them before, this time I also wanted to capture some time lapse footage as a better way of sharing with others just how incredible this display of light really is. Dean and I were in Alaska to scope out an itinerary for a Photo Tour we are putting together for 2016 which will include the… READ MORE >

McLennan_NightSki

This was a fun shoot with a lot of logistics involved together with problem solving to reach the final result. My client, Angel Fire Ski Resort in New Mexico, wanted a new night ski/boarding image so I captured some more “traditional” style images on the mountain whilst night skiing was in operation. However I had conceptualised an idea in my mind some time ago that took this idea to the next level.  I wanted to capture an action ski shot at night – freezing the action… READ MORE >

McLennan_FXbikes_098

I recently completed a photo shoot in Glenorchy (in the South Island of New Zealand) for a NZ company “FX Bikes” to shoot their prototype, super light, go anywhere, 60 kg “Mountain Moto” motorcycle. It was great to be able to work in such beautiful locations as there are on offer in this area.  Glenorchy is a personal favourite of mine and I love every opportunity I have to get back there.  On this shoot, I photographed two motorcycles as a father and his 12 year… READ MORE >

Wow! Isn’t it great when you come up with a new project that ends up being way more fun than you anticipated, and then takes on a life all of its own! Makes all the hard work seem worth it that’s for sure. And so began the life of “Car-L”…  I first had the idea of using a remote control vehicle to get a camera up close and personal to wildlife after a trip to Africa in 2012. A friend gave me her son’s old remote… READ MORE >

Chris McLennan Video

It seemed like a fun project to put together a slide show of the first 12 months (not even) of shooting back on Nikon. However it was one of those projects that got away on me once I actually started…! If you are a photographer reading this, I challenge you to look back at just a single year’s worth of your own photography.  Its amazing how many images we actually take – and how many of them provide “markers” for the journey we all take with… READ MORE >

If you are a regular follower of Chris’s work you will no doubt be aware that he spends much of his time in exotic regions of the world seeing and photographing sights and experiences most of us only dream about… But what about the lucky few who get to join him? I was recently in touch with one of the guests from Chris’s (September) Wildlight Safari through Botswana and felt I just had to share his imagery and comments here. His shots are amazing!! Take a… READ MORE >

I was preparing for an exhibition earlier this year and had the concept of restricting the content to a 12 month period of one of my favourite subjects – Wildlife. In the lead up to the exhibition I had just started shooting with the D800E.  I was so captivated by the huge files and the ability to capture incredible detail in the images that I decided to shoot some local content specifically for the exhibition with that camera.  This is where the idea was born to… READ MORE >
