Wildlife photography often demands fast focusing, rapid fire shooting and lightning reflexes, however to be successful it often requires more than that – the one common factor required is thought and planning.  It doesn’t always work out the way you wanted but knowledge of your subject and it’s behaviour mixed with forethought and planning – plus calm and efficient reactions – and your odds will increase dramatically. Timing is everything.  The speed required for great wildlife photography isn’t always about freezing high speed action but can… READ MORE >

Keeping busy as a commercial photographer often comes with the perception that we must forgo creative opportunities in order to meet a client’s specific brief.  But retaining that creative point of difference is what makes us irreplaceable, and what helps photographers stay relevant and necessary in an ever changing digital industry.  Just about anything you can imagine has probably already been done in Photoshop or Illustrator (and been posted on Instagram).  But that doesn’t stop us imagining and trying to create new pictures with our cameras. … READ MORE >

Part of being a commercial photographer for over 25 years is that people start to ask you lots of questions. The photographic industry is still a dynamically changing and growing one, and the number of young folk now looking to a career in the image making sector is probably more than ever. For Chris, who started his career during the “dark ages” (aka darkroom) of film photography back in 1988, this is a great opportunity to offer his experience and share all he has learned over… READ MORE >

My 2015 schedule included a number of shoots “across the ditch” in Australia, which – compared to some of my travels further afield – can sometimes feel a lot like home. Despite their need to call jandals “thongs” and claim numerous Kiwi icons as their own (from Pavlova to Phar Lap to Russell Crowe), when you bump into an Aussie in the backstreets of Beijing or on Safari in Namibia it is always a pleasant surprise and makes the world seem that much smaller. So to… READ MORE >

After being dropped in by charter plane to a lonely grass airstrip, surrounded on all sides by dense tropical jungle echoing with the musical notes of abundant birdlife, it was obvious to all that we were in one of the more remote areas of Papua New Guinea. I was here to guide a small group of photographers as we journeyed to see the primitive tribes and traditional culture of this incredible country – one of the worlds’ least explored and yet home to 7 million people… READ MORE >

The rising fog as a storm clears in Fiordland creating an amazing spectacle.

You can see why New Zealand so quickly and easily became not only the visual background for the epic Lord of the Rings movies, but literally BECAME Middle Earth itself.  Although JR Tolkein never visited this country in his lifetime, he must have had exactly our kind of wild and impressive landscapes in mind when he first imagined Middle Earth. Though who could have dreamed that one of the youngest nations on earth would so truly BECOME the literal and physical home of the greatest fantasy… READ MORE >

Westin Bali

2015 has been a busy year with shoots in locations as far afield as China and as close to home as Muriwai Beach. And scattered amongst them have been a bunch of trips to Fiji, where Chris is fortunate to work for a number of resorts, hotels, tourism operators and other businesses over there on a regular basis. Chris first started shooting in Fiji way back in the late 90′s, though to be honest its so long ago I can’t recall who our first actual client… READ MORE >

Fashion Show 4

Here’s something a little different. As part of my current work for Tourism and Events Queensland, I have been photographing a number of events around Australia, including most recently, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. Currently in its sixth year, this is a festival that highlights Australia’s truly unique aboriginal culture and showcases the visual art of Queensland’s First Nation. Featuring not only traditional art pieces but also performance through song, dance, fashion, screen and theatre – alongside an Art Market, workshops and informative talks – this… READ MORE >

For nearly ten years Chris has been trying to get me to join him on one of his trips to the US. For some reason I am always dragging my feet and coming up with excuses, most of which are based on the winter temperatures involved as he is usually over there for ski shoots. This year was no different, Chris was scheduled to be at Snowshoe Resort in West Virginia followed by a quick stop in Colorado. As always the temperatures were in their extremes… READ MORE >

Balloons over Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand

“Smoke and mirrors”  (Actually fog and reflections)…  :-) Fellow photographer and friend Mike Hollman and I decided to take a very early morning drive (4am to be exact) from Auckland down to Hamilton to photograph the annual “Hamilton NZ Mass Ascension – Balloons over Waikato” festival.  I hadn’t been to this event before but had always wanted to, so with the forecast looking good the decision was made to jump in the car and go!  We arrived in time to pick a spot and be ready… READ MORE >
