Despite it’s winter themed name, Snowshoe mountain is a fantastic summer retreat with so much on offer it was hard to know where to begin when I arrived there late last month to commence a commercial photo shoot. From clay bird shooting to mountain biking, wilderness canoes and offroad Segways, a round of golf or a round of cocktails, exploring the forest trails by foot or by 4×4, seeking out peaceful tranquility or some spills, thrills and adventure… It can all be easily found in this gorgeously tree-clad, nature park.
Weather was not on its best behavior for the first few days, but patience paid off with beautiful clear skies for the remainder of the shoot, offering up photo opportunities galore as I traversed the mountain from one end to the other, camera backpack and organised talent in tow. My only real challenge was an embarrassing recovery after managing to fall off my Segway half way around the trail, oops!
But all in all it was a great shoot and we achieved some fantastic new imagery which my client is thrilled with. Shooting outdoor activities like this can be incredibly rewarding and these are just a small taste of what we covered that week.
One of my favorite images from the shoot is the backlit mountain biker (last image in the gallery). To achieve this shot and the great foreground shadow detail I wanted, I exposed for the background trees and fired an Elinchrom Quadra from slightly in front of and to the side of the biker as he rode past. This gave me the desired shadow and also lit the rider for some much more dramatic lighting.
Thanks to Dave, Olaf and the team from Snowshoe for a great shoot, looking forward to seeing you all again in the winter months!
