backlit bear Chris McLennan

This was undoubtedly one of my favorite moments (of many) on my recent Alaskan Grizzly Bears photo tour! We were photographing this particular bear in the late evening sun and I could see a special opportunity coming. In this instance there wasn’t a lot of time to provide my guests with more thorough instructions. I simply called a few quick commands to “move left, lie down – get as low as you can, underexpose by at least 2 – 3 stops, and be ready”. It all… READ MORE >

This is an image I created during one of my Photo Tours in Namibia.  Our group had spent some time in this village and among these wonderful people so they were very comfortable with our presence and happy to go about their daily life whilst we were there. In this instance, the children were returning home after a day tending the goats and the evening light as the sun set behind the village really enhanced the earth tones and textures of the Namib people and their… READ MORE >

Wildlife photography often demands fast focusing, rapid fire shooting and lightning reflexes, however to be successful it often requires more than that – the one common factor required is thought and planning.  It doesn’t always work out the way you wanted but knowledge of your subject and it’s behaviour mixed with forethought and planning – plus calm and efficient reactions – and your odds will increase dramatically. Timing is everything.  The speed required for great wildlife photography isn’t always about freezing high speed action but can… READ MORE >

Chris McLennan elephant closeup

Is there a secret to better wildlife photography? For those of you following Chris on social media, you will know he just spent two months in South Africa with Wildlight Safaris guiding groups through Botswana and Namibia. And before that he was in Alaska hosting another group to photography the grizzly bears. It’s easy to get great photos when you have an expert beside you offering tips and advice and providing hands-on tuition and guidance! But how about some user-friendly tips for the rest of us… READ MORE >

Balloons over Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand

“Smoke and mirrors”  (Actually fog and reflections)…  :-) Fellow photographer and friend Mike Hollman and I decided to take a very early morning drive (4am to be exact) from Auckland down to Hamilton to photograph the annual “Hamilton NZ Mass Ascension – Balloons over Waikato” festival.  I hadn’t been to this event before but had always wanted to, so with the forecast looking good the decision was made to jump in the car and go!  We arrived in time to pick a spot and be ready… READ MORE >

McLennan_Snowshoe_winter15_0028

You may recall an earlier post about my summer shoot at Snowshoe resort in West Virginia, on the East Coast of the United States of America. This time I was back for a winter shoot and once again the weather and conditions were on our side. From beautiful clear sunny days to fresh powder and an overnight low of minus 25 degrees Celsius, we experienced both extremes! My partners in crime on this shoot were Kalen and Mpaz, on skis and snowboard they helped cart my… READ MORE >

McLennan_Great Wall of China_002

So far it’s been a busy year with commercial shoots in the South Island, US, China, Norway, Botswana, Fiji and Alaska.  But while at home briefly between projects earlier this year I had the privilege of presenting to a few different groups within New Zealand’s very enthusiastic photographic community.  One of the questions I always get asked is “how did you become a travel photographer” – or more often worded by the younger members of the audience “how can I become a travel photographer”?  (Watch this… READ MORE >

Well, it’s been pretty quiet on the blog front of late, my apologies! That’s what happens when you have a few too many things on your plate all at once. June was indeed a busy month with our Travel Photography Awards competition closing on the 30th, I was booked to be shooting in Fiji for a full month (followed by only a week at home before heading out again to China), I had three speaking engagements to deliver to different groups within the photographic community and… READ MORE >

McLennan_Africa_profile_

In September 2013 Chris spent time in Africa hosting a group photo tour with Wildlight Safaris, as well as visiting the Himba tribes of Namibia and capturing some great new wildlife images from Botswana as he checked out possible tour locations for this year’s Photo Tour safari. It was while on this trip that Chris first introduced us to Car-L and the amazing lion pics he was able to capture with this small remote control vehicle. What we haven’t shared with you yet are the further… READ MORE >

McLennan_NightSki

This was a fun shoot with a lot of logistics involved together with problem solving to reach the final result. My client, Angel Fire Ski Resort in New Mexico, wanted a new night ski/boarding image so I captured some more “traditional” style images on the mountain whilst night skiing was in operation. However I had conceptualised an idea in my mind some time ago that took this idea to the next level.  I wanted to capture an action ski shot at night – freezing the action… READ MORE >

McLennan_FXbikes_098

I recently completed a photo shoot in Glenorchy (in the South Island of New Zealand) for a NZ company “FX Bikes” to shoot their prototype, super light, go anywhere, 60 kg “Mountain Moto” motorcycle. It was great to be able to work in such beautiful locations as there are on offer in this area.  Glenorchy is a personal favourite of mine and I love every opportunity I have to get back there.  On this shoot, I photographed two motorcycles as a father and his 12 year… READ MORE >
